PROJECT REVEAL: Primary Suite remodel

This client brought a fresh breeze into our studio! As a result of their positive attitude, excitement, and impeccable taste, this remodel turned out even better than expected.

Inspiration & Space Planning

Inspired by their European travel journeys, the homeowners wished to recreate the feeling of a "staycation" while enjoying the amenities of a boutique hotel. This suite that consists of two main areas, five small closets arranged at the corners of the two rooms, and a tiny bathroom was devoid of appeal, functionality, and warmth. With a minimalistic aesthetic paired with a warm and cozy color palette with nodes to simple and refined materials, this renovation was set for success. The most important piece of the puzzle was the study of a new floor plan. After optimizing closet space and expanding the bathroom footprint to accommodate a tub and a separate water closet, we framed new walls and opened up the bedroom by removing the small closets to create a desk and a lounge area.

Needs & Wishes

The primary suite layout is designed for easy flow, with alternating finishes and a consistent color palette to enhance personal touches. In the hallway leading to the bathroom and closets, Schumacher's floral motif wallpaper printed on grass cloth creates a moody ambience. In contrast, the bedroom is bright and airy, allowing natural light to filter in through the multiple windows. In both the bathroom and walk-in closet, storage solutions allow for optimal space utilization and organization.

Dreamy Closet

Designed to separate the spouses' belongings, a dreamy walk-in closet was created for her to store and display clothes, shoes and jewelry, while a set of separate armoire style cabinets allowed him to organize his clothing between casual and work clothing. By partnering with California Closet, we achieved the goal in style

Finishes for the suite were selected based on practical considerations, including hex ceramic tile flooring, porcelain tiles that resemble limestone, and unlacquered brass fittings by Waterworks. The stain on the vanity matches the oak floors throughout the house, and decorative lighting was selected to complement traditional elements while introducing modern elements. The paint color was chosen to create a more elevated and customized look.

Details in Design

Color coordination was achieved through layering different weights of textile. In selecting furniture and decor, attention to detail allowed for seamless transitions between the different areas within the suite. There were a number of elements in the selection, including a slipcovered bed frame in Belgian linen, grasscloth wallpaper in the hallway, cotton roman shades on all windows, white oak custom nightstands and a leather desk chair with an elegant silhouette. Having been a firm believer in the balance between old and new, while also meeting sustainability preferences, we have reintegrated the existing desk and introduced a set of vintage lounge chairs for a cozy reading spot while the vintage area rug serves as a perfect grounding element.

This new design provides a sense of balance and establishes a strong connection with the rest of the house, an elegant 1920s Dutch colonial in Winnetka.
